The International Profile
Synopsis:
The International Profiler (TIP) is a questionnaire and feedback process that helps managers and professionals reflect on where their skills are (and where they may be lacking) in working internationally. TIP coaching enables business leaders to identify development needs in the areas of global leadership, international management and cross-cultural communication skills.
Goals:
Identify the potential strengths and areas of development to work effectively with people of different cultures.

Assessment and Coaching:
a) Key Elements:

TIP is based on the results of extensive research and the experience of practical international business people. This psychometric instrument assesses 10 competencies (with 22 associated skills, attitudes and areas of knowledge) that define the capabilities required to transfer leadership, managerial and professional skills to an international context. TIP is normed, enabling people to benchmark themselves against an international comparison group. The norm group currently comprises over 800 people from 46 different nationalities.
b) How TIP Works:

TIP is an on-line questionnaire that can be completed in 20-45 minutes.
The data from the questionnaires is used to generate personal feedback profiles that portray the way that individuals typically work with people from cultural backgrounds different to their own.
The information from TIP is interpreted and fed-back by a trained and licensed Charis consultant. The participant receives a detailed feedback book, and personal development plans and additional coaching can be provided. TIP feedback can be done on a one-to-one basis or as part of a training session with a group.
c) Skill Building:

TIP is linked to Charis' Global Leader Competencies two-day leadership development program. Using discussion, lecture, and video case studies, participants gain feedback from TIP as part of an on-going coaching/developmental process.
d) Typical TIP Candidates:

    Leaders, managers and professionals who:
  • Lead or participate in global teams
  • Deal with the consequences of cross-border mergers/acquisitions
  • Go on international transfers or expatriate assignments
  • Lead projects across borders
  • Conduct knowledge transfer or training internationally
  • Introduce policies and procedures in other countries

What participants have to say:

“The TIP was spot-on! I enjoyed the process, and Marian was an excellent coach .”

- Linda Alepin, Director of the Global Women's Leadership Center
Leavy School of Business, Santa Clara University

Competency 9 Influencing
International rapport building skills can take on strategic importance to facilitate cohesion on the inside and accelerate learning from external informal networks on the outside. In international contexts building rapport is more challenging because of the pressure to be task-focused, while we need greater sensitivity to different ways in which relationships are forged.

Competency 10 Synergy
An important skill for global leaders is the ability to overcome differences in a way that harnesses all the knowledge, skills and ideas of the people involved. They need to be able to release the energy and creativity of all concerned; to help teams find ways of working together that transcend different national approaches; and to design new solutions that build on and integrate the best ideas wherever they may come from.
