Synopsis:
Gain insight to Costa Rican cultural values, history and current affairs, sources of local pride, sensitivity, and motivation. Understand the significant impact your global business operations have on this Central American republic. Learn how to communicate with Costa Ricans by building trust and networking, identifying decision makers and negotiation strategies. Gain tips for E-mail, teleconferencing and training. Learn recruiting, hiring and retaining strategies, influencing and motivating. Prepare for business trips & hosting Ticos at your site for technology transfer.

Goals:
Understand the cultural values operating in Costa Rica, gain strategies and tactics for business and management challenges, and practice Costa Rican communication styles in order to work effectively with Costa Ricans.

Training Content – Participants will learn:

  • Cultural Values: Identify the “Tico” or Costa Rican unique identity, within the context of Latin America. Key Costa Rican cultural values, such as respect for authority, education, family, and egalitarianism, plus the passions for politics, the environment and soccer deliver insights to Costa Rican motivation in this close-knit society.
  • Business and Management Practices: Learn the importance good interpersonal skills to build successful business relationships with trust, respect and loyalty. Plan and manage projects by understanding infrastructure constraints and family commitments. Learn how to navigate hierarchy to the appropriate levels of decision-making authority. Discover how to get quicker responses. Lead and participate in meetings with greater participation, problem-solving, and commitment.
  • Corporate Contrasts: Similarities and differences between Costa Rican culture and your corporate culture (values and business practices), i.e., how Costa Ricans view competition, customer orientation, risk-taking, quality, innovation, work/life balance, safety, valuing diversity, teambuilding, etc.
  • Fundamentals: The uniqueness that forms the basis of their pride as a people includes their Spanish farming heritage, influx of immigrants, the imprint of Pepe Figueres on the national character, the presidency and Nobel Peace Prize of Oscar Arias, and the arrival of the high tech boom of the late 90’s.
  • Communication Style: Recognize when Costa Ricans do not directly disagree, refuse, or deliver “bad news” and how to clarify these situations. Avoid embarrassing a Tico counterpart by giving and receiving feedback appropriately. Learn ways to get agreements and commitments from individuals or groups. Learn conversation openers and topics to avoid; key Spanish phrases, names and titles; interpret gestures and body language appropriately.
  • Business Travel: Pack for business and ecotourism; learn the expectations of being a guest with Costa Ricans, dining and drinking protocol; personal safety precautions; work schedules; dealing with local transportation, laws and authorities.
